What you need to know about DJI’s Phantom 3 Standard

DJI is finally catching up with entry level drones. The 10 year old company that became famous for professional models has something for beginners now.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard offers a smooth flight experience and high quality footage. Its built-in 2.7K resolution camera is easy to operate and competes with cameras in more expensive models. Most importantly, DJI has dropped the price of the Phantom 3 Standard from $800 to $500 for its 10th anniversary. This price drop makes the Phantom 3 Standard perhaps the most affordable and best value-for-money offer by a brand drone manufacturer. DJI has not announced an end date to this offer yet. So if you are new to the drone game and want to start with a branded product, this is your chance.

What is remarkable about this drone is that compared to other drones in the same price category, it is relatively easy to fly. It has automated takeoff and landing functions and is very stable in air. Just like its more advanced siblings, the Phantom 3 Standard has intelligent modes such as a “Return Home” button. The integrated camera is also a performance star.

Like Phantom 3 Pro and Advanced, Phantom’s entry-model has a 94 degree wide angle lens. Its integrated 3 axis gimbal guarantees stable shots. At 2.7K resolution and 30 frames per second, the Phantom 3 Standard has the same maximum resolution like its more expensive siblings. To make it easier, DJI also includes a microSD card that fits 8 GB of footage.

Despite its unbelievable cheap price, Phantom 3 Standard has a few cons that you should be aware of. For starters, its battery allows for 20 minute flight times only. Although this is the same as other beginner drones, it might be disappointing for a DJI. Another negative aspect is that its camera can not be removed. This means that you won’t be able to upgrade the camera DIY without having to buy a new drone. For travelers, it is also important to mention that the landing gear on this drone does not collapse, making it more difficult to transport.

So if you want to fly like a pro but don’t want to spend more than $500, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard might be just the drone you are looking for.
